Why are wigs worn in court in the UK?!?

I am a US citizen watching Law and Order UK. I see the lawyers n judge have wigs on. I thought it was a joke at first but then I thought about it and I’m sure they wouldn’t joke like that in court. What is the reason for the wigs?

Britain changes slowly – the wigs (and half wigs and periwukes and robes) all were fashionable once upon a time. Our high courts have as part of the dress code frozen scraps of fashion from centuries ago. Lower courts settled for a smart suit ages ago.
